The Welsh Refugee Council and Oasis Cardiff are working together to create a cookery book to raise money for both organisations. We would be delighted if you would consider sponsoring or part sponsoring the book to enable us to design and produce 500 copies of it.

The Welsh Refugee Council is an independent charity that empowers asylum seekers and refugees to rebuild their lives in Wales. It works in partnership with other agencies to provide advice and support for individuals in areas such as housing, education and employment. It also runs a hardship fund for destitute asylum seekers.

The hardship fund is run entirely on public donations and there is often not enough money to go around. The fund supports the most vulnerable of asylum seekers by meeting essential needs such as paying for transport, food, baby equipment and clothes, thus it is a lifeline for some people.

Oasis Cardiff runs a drop-in for asylum seekers and refugees open three days a week. It provides different activities such as cookery classes, storytelling, and confidence building workshops. 

The money raised from the book will go towards Welsh Refugee Council’s hardship fund and the running of Oasis Cardiff’s drop-in.

The recipe book will be comprised of a collection of recipes from around the world contributed by asylum seekers and refugees living in Cardiff. These individuals will also be involved in the design and photography of the book and with anecdotes about their recipes.

One such recipe is Zain’s from Palestine; it is a dish called ‘makluba’, made by layering chicken, aubergine and rice with spices and is one that he watched his mother cook when he was a child. It has a hidden twist revealed at the end as ‘makluba’ means ‘upside down’ in Arabic!

Cuisine is an integral part of every culture and a love of food is something people share worldwide, whatever their background or circumstance. Therefore the aim of the book is to celebrate the contributions that asylum seekers and refugees make to Wales through the medium of cookery, aiding integration and understanding.

The book is already encouraging the enterprise and creativity of asylum seekers and refugees who have contributed their recipes and ideas and has the potential to encourage this in many others, and in other refugee organisations once published.

Welsh Refugee Council and Oasis Cardiff is keen to work with local and independent businesses as much as possible as we would like it to be something that can mutually benefit us and an enterprise that both parties believe in.

The book will be sold at refugee events such as Refugee Week which attracts hundreds of members of the public to different events held in June. Welsh Refugee Council and Oasis also have many contacts with organisations in the community such as churches, schools and community centres where the books will be sold as well as with other refugee organisations. Through both Welsh Refugee Council and Oasis’ website and social networking pages, we are also able to reach a large number of people. You may also like to sell it to your customers.

Once the cookery book is published, there will be a launch event with global music where different recipes from the book can be tasted, and where copies of the book will be made available.

To have your logo or if not applicable, a small advert, displayed in our book, we are charging £100. For this we will also include your business contact details in a list at the back of the book under ‘good food’ in Cardiff.

If you would like to add a recipe using ingredients, or one of the dishes, that you sell, this would be £200. This will allow you to use the recipe, the inspiration for it and the photography to publicise your business.

If you would like to promote your business with the stall at the launch event, we are charging £150. To sponsor us in one of these ways or all three, please get in touch! We are open to negotiation and other ways in which you may be able to support us.
