Gateway course graduation

Last month was the long anticipated graduation of the first group to complete the Gateway course.  One by one each graduate bravely delivered a speech to share the things that they had achieved from participating on the course. After everyone was presented with a certificate.

If you are interested in being involved with the next Engagement Gateway Course then please, come along to the one beginning on the 23rd of April (details here).

News from the floor!

Hello from all the staff at Oasis Cardiff! We are excited to share with you something of what has been happening over the past year. Back in September we celebrated our 3rd anniversary since opening as a drop-in centre for Refugees and Asylum seekers in 2008. During that time we have had the privilege of meeting many individuals who come to Britain to seek sanctuary.   We currently have on average over fifty people who come to the new venue at the TAVS Centre every day. They represent a number of different countries including Sudan, Eritrea, Zimbabwe, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya amongst many others.
We seek to welcome and befriend these individuals who often come to Britain traumatized from events in their own country. There are a number of different workshops that take place during the week that service users can participate in. These include English classes, CV workshops, Job Club, I.T. skills, Sewing, Photoshop, Drama and other creative groups and lessons.

Many of the asylum seekers who attend are not permitted to work until they get their refugee status. The centre provides an opportunity for them to integrate, make new friends and keep busy whilst they wait for news on whether or not their individual case for asylum has been accepted.
We want to say a big thank you to all our volunteers and supporters, whose help enables us to draw alongside those who find themselves in a foreign and alien culture, often without family and little in the way of personal possessions.

The Refugee House

In June 2012 we are going to be building The Refugee House at The National History Museum, St Fagans. We want you to to tell us what this house should look like.
We are looking for volunteers that are interested in work experience as Museum Guides and can help tell us what this house should look like. We want to hear from you.
The first workshop is on Friday the 10th of February at St Fagans. We will arrange transport and food.
If you want to take part, come down to Oasis between 10am and 3pm every Monday to Thursday at The Tavistock Centre, Tavistock Street, Roath OR you can contact either Dave or Reynette.  We’ll be running workshops every Wednesday that include things such as drama, dance, photography, art and sewing.
